Jim has been practicing law for more than 23 years. He concentrates his practice in the area of estate planning, probate and trust administration and is a frequent lecturer on various topics relating to estate planning. Jim has presented numerous times at the Minnesota CLE Probate and Trust Law Institute, an annual conference of approximately 800 trust and estate lawyers and trust officers from throughout Minnesota and the upper Midwest. In the summer of 2011 he presented one of his two presentations from that year’s Institute. Jim also serves on the planning committee for the Institute. In the fall of 2009 Jim was a panelist at the Minnesota CLE program “Estate Planning in Uncertain Times.” And in January, 2011 he served as course co-chair at the Minnesota CLE seminar “Estate Planning in 2011 & Beyond: Critical Issues in Planning, Administration and Drafting.”

Jim counsels clients on issues relating to their financial, estate and business succession planning preparing fundamental estate planning documents such as powers-of-attorney, health care directives, wills and revocable trusts and more sophisticated estate plans using such techniques as irrevocable life insurance trusts (ILITs), qualified personal residence trusts(QPRTs), grantor retained annuity trusts (GRATs), family limited partnerships (FLPs) and buy-sell agreements. Additionally, Jim counsels clients on issues of trust administration and prepares fiduciary income tax, estate and gift tax returns.
